SARAH BYRNE
b. 1986
————————————
Sarah Byrne is a Melbourne based artist interested in the cross-pollination of video, voice and performative installation practice. Byrne investigates conceptual and material forms of sound and the disruption of spaces, often guided by practices of sound-led video appropriation. Embracing chaos, and intrigued by humour, non-sense making, and the incidental hitches of analogue media; her practice situates itself as a sometimes musing discussion, unpacking of systems of identity, language, and the flaws and oddities of our social, cultural, and sonic selves.
Recent exhibitions and performances include; See How You Go, Down Under Space, Sydney, 2017; Negative Volumes: Danger Magic, Liquid Architecture, Firstdraft, Sydney, 2017; A-97, Next Wave, ACMI, 2016; Experimenta: Recharge, Tele-Visions, Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide; RMIT Gallery, Melbourne 2015; Pocket Holiday: Zonk Vision, Babycastles, Manhattan; Spectacle Theater, Brooklyn; Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 2014; Found Sound- Reinventing the Wheel: The Readymade Century, MUMA, 2013.
Byrne is a 2008 Queensland University of Technology honours graduate, past co-director of Brisbane artist-run-initiative inbetweenspaces, currently fronts experimental improv outfit- Sky Needle, and video editor of VHS initiative Video Flex.
